Even though GTA IV was launched the past month, it did not help either Play station 3 or Xbox360 to overtake Wii in terms of sales. Wii sold 714,000 units in April while Nintendo DS sold 414,000 units. Xbox360 was just slightly ahead of Play station 3 selling 188,000 units while Play station 3 sold 187,100 units. Both the consoles sales were down by a huge margin compared to the sales in March where Xbox360 sold 262,000 and Play station 3 sold 257,000 units.
Sony was quite happy with the sales figure and Jack Tretton, CEO of SCEA said “Clearly, the tremendous legacy of Grand Theft Auto on PlayStation, combined with the blockbuster launch of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue packed a one-two punch with consumers at retail this month. The proof is in the numbers and, in April, PlayStation 3 hardware sales experienced a 127% increase over April of last year”. Play station 2 was also alive selling 124,000 units.
GTA IV was the top selling game for the month (no surprises) and Mario Kart Wii took the 2nd place.

Built inside an oak box, this classic arcade uses controls from Sanwa and Seimitsu and of course all those pretty green and different colored LEDs. The self made oak box is also beautifully designed and woos away everyone within the first sight! I hope this would have been produced on large scale so as to please geeks like us!

The Nintendo gaming console Wii has now caught up to Microsoft’s Xbox 360 in the total market share. This is despite the fact that the Xbox 360 had about 1 year of head start. Even so the Xbox 360 still maintains a very sizable lead over the Playstation 3 from Sony which is considered to be its more direct competitor.

Wii wannabes hoping for a dip in its pricing for the coming holiday season may have to wait a while longer. A drop from the current $249 retail price in the Us territory is not going to happen very soon. George Harrison, chief of marketing in US cited strong demand for Wii as the reason in an interview with Reuters recently.
Nintendo is likely to keep the price steady at that $250 level, he continued, as Nintendo is in an excellent position even after its competitors Sony( NYSE:SNE) and Microsoft(Nasdaq: MSFT) did some aggressive price cuts on their consoles failed to stall Nintendo’s momentum.
Even as its competitors shuffle their prices to gain market share and push sales in the upcoming holiday season, Nintendo is going to be on the same price on its hot selling consoles. There’s no reason not to. It is the hottest selling gaming console, cheaper that it two major competitors and is widely under supplied in the US.
